A Message from the President
Edye B. McCarthy, IAO
President, New York State Assessors' Association
1998 - 1999

The oath I have taken before you tonight, is not mine alone, but I feel ours together. Each of the 58 years of our association's existence, we have been faced special challenges and I would like to applaud the presidents who preceded me for a job well done. The challenges that confront us now, can be vanquished as long as we as an organization work together and I emphasize the we and together. We are approximately 1,300 members strong and I feel there is strength in numbers.

We need to meet the twenty-first century with a revitalized outlook. In order to accomplish this, we need to communicate amongst ourselves, to the public, emphasize the good things we do while maintaining professionalism.

Every year our jobs get a little more political, our responsibilities a little more arduous, and some of our duties a little more tedious. This year we all rose to the challenge of the STAR exemption and overcame it. I am sure that in the coming years, there will be more challenges, but with professionalism and communication, we can overcome them also.

My theme for this year is nothing that we all have not worked towards before, Professionalism and Visibility. It is our responsibility to push forward and grow. Without your efforts and teamwork we will not be able to meet the challenges facing us while continuing to grow.

A wise man once said, we should be concerned with the future because we have to spend the rest of our lives there.

Professionalism is the core of who we should be. In order to be credible we must be professional, and in order to be professional, we must be educated.

This association is comprised of members from all parts of the state, the entire State of New York. I know that each of us do our jobs a little differently but we all have the same goals and we have to work together to achieve them. There are many committees, and subcommittees where we need your help, so if you are interested in becoming involved, we will not know this unless you tell us. Your Association needs you.

Thank you again for this honor you have bestowed upon me. I know we will have a great year.
